Press release on Galmudug’s violation of the signed agreement.
Press Release For Immediate Release The Government of Puntland State finds the new acts of aggression by the Galmudug Interim Administration to be unfortunate and shameful, as we, along with our partners were working overtime and in good faith to reach a peace agreement and de-escalate the conflict in Mudug.
A new round of unprovoked attacks was launched again this morning as the tripartite disengagement teams were meeting at the airport to conclude ongoing discussions.
The initial attacks utilized small arms and machine gun fire before artillery barrages were directed on the civilian population causing death and injuries.
Time and time again, the assurances and commitments that Puntland State has received have been violated at will.
If the leadership of the Galmudug Interim Administration is focused on issues of land grabs and expansion by stealth, the options for peaceful resolutions will remain limited and severely constrained.
Furthermore, we cannot even be certain that the leadership in Galmudug is able to fulfil any of the requirements for delivering the peace, as they are not fully in control of the situation on the ground and their militias.
It is the paramount responsibility of the Government of Puntland to protect the lives and livelihood of our citizenry, and we will always endeavour to do so. As always, the Government of Puntland remains committed to the stability, peace and security of the region.
Puntland State will at all times remain a rational partner for the Somali people and the international community going forward.
