PUNTLAND STATE PRESIDENT H.E DR ABDIWALI MOHAMAD ALI GAS IS AT THE START OF A WORKING VISIT IN NORTH AMERICA
Puntland State President H.E Dr Abdiwali Mohamad Ali Gas is at the start of a working visit in north America ,Canada and USA to confer with senior US officials and other stakeholders on the prospects for peace and security in the volatile Horn of Africa region. Somalia , Puntand State . Although its region in northeastern Somalia, declared the territory an autonomous state in 1998.and now seriously considering declaration of independence has yet to be formally recognized by the international community, Puntland has nonetheless managed to establish a stable polity with multiparty presidential, parliamentary, and municipal elections which have been deemed free and fair by international observers. As a result, an increasing number of countries have found opportunities to engage with the Puntland government on security issues and development projects.
Puntland is bordered by the self-declared Republic of Somaliland to its west, the Gulf of Aden in the north, the Indian Ocean in the southeast, the central Galmudug region in the south, and Ethiopia in the southwest. A third of Somalia’s population lives in the territory, which contains about a third of the nation’s geographical area. Unlike the neighbouring self-declared Republic of Somaliland, Puntland, as with all other regions in the country,now does not seek outright independence from Somalia. but seriously considering because of worsening of the situation in Mogadishu and current political situation 4.5 Puntland will try to obtain international recognition as a separate nation. Following the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in 1991, a homegrown constitutional conference was held in Garoowe in 1998 over a period of three months. Attended by the area’s political elite, traditional elders (Issims), members of the business community, intellectuals and other civil society representatives, the autonomous Puntland State of Somalia was established to deliver services to the population, offer security, facilitate trade, and interact with domestic and international partners
The name “Puntland” is derived from the Land of Punt mentioned by ancient Egyptian sources. The exact location of the fabled territory is still a mystery. Many studies suggest that the Land of Punt was located in present-day Somalia,whereas others propose that it was situated elsewhere.
