U.S. Airstrike in Somalia Kills Scores of Al-Shabab Militants During ‘Ceremony’

Monday March 7, 2016

As many as 100 members of the al-Shabab terrorist group were killed by U.S. airstrikes in Somalia overnight Sunday, senior defense officials told NBC News.

The officials said unmanned American drones dropped bombs and launched Hellfire missiles in the devastating air assault on a large gathering of the militants.

It appeared “the group was in formation” conducting “some kind of ceremony” when the airstrikes were launched, one official said.

It’s not clear whether any senior al-Shabab leaders were killed in the strikes, and no other information was immediately available.

Al-Shabab has been responsible for terrorist attacks throughout East Africa, including the massacre of 67 civilians during a four-day siege at the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya in September 2013.

Similar U.S. airstrikes in the region have been previously launched from an American airbase in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa.
